Goldschmidt was a German-French painter amateur astronomer and a systematic asteroid searcher, discovered 14 asteroids.

Hermann Mayer Salomon Goldschmidt lived in France, in most of his life. After listening to the presentation of the great astronomer of his age - Urbain Le Verrier – he turned towards astronomy. He was the most successful asteroid explorer of his age, by 1861 he had 14 discoveries. He got the astronomer's most prestigious honor, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. Only on one medal his left-facing bust can be found that was issued in connection with the discovery of the 100th asteroid.
