There is always a dispute whether Stonehenge can be treated as an prehistoric observatory. Anyway, its ability to use its building structure as an observatory it deserves its place among observatories.
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England, about 3 km west of Amesbury and 13 km north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
Several medals exist depicting Stonehenge. Some of them are available in the visitors' shop. On the obverse on one of them the beautifully drawn view of the standing stones is visible.
Its reverse show the map of the Stonehenge complex structure, that includes besides the stones holes, barrows. Some of them are named.
Another medal show very similar obverse, except that the stone in the background in the center of the medal are missing. The legend is also the same, the name: "STONEHENGE".
However the reverse is completely different. A decoratively pictured helmeted warrior is facing to the right. The legend "THE OFFICIAL MEDAL COLLECTION OF GREAT BRITAIN" explains that this medal special issue, a part of a series.
Not only English medals displays Stonehenge. Its possible astronomy relation forced a medalist of the International Year of Astronomy to put its view on a coin. The 5 euro silver commemorative coin of San Marino shows Stonehenge left in its center. Along with other astronomical instrument, an astrolabe and a rocket like path represent the development of astronomy from ancient through middle ages to the today's high technology. Legend around is: "ANNO INTERNAZIONALE DELL' ASTRONOMIA 2009" refers to the event it was issued for.
The reverse shows allegoric planets with the same rocket like path. The legend identifies the issuer: "REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO".
