Cuba celebrated the International Year of Astronomy by issuing a 1 peso coin.

The obverse shows the portrait of Galileo Galilei, his name, the famous "double" telescope and his sketch of the Lunar surface from his logbook. Legend above is: "Año Internacional de la Astronomía", i. e. "International Year of Astronomy". Just right from his head the date 2009 is barely visible.


The reverse shows the coat of arms of Cuba. Legend above is: "REPUBLICA DE CUBA", below is the face value: 1 PESO.
